JEROME "JERRY" V. JOHANNES

Jerome "Jerry" V. Johannes, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Parish service: 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Father Steve Garner. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Jerry was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of William and Zita (Langel) Johannes. He graduated from the University of Iowa with his degree in electrical engineering. Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. On May 16, 1953, in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Celeste Zbornik. Jerry was employed at Iowa Manufacturing as an electrical engineer until retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Celeste of Cedar Rapids; children, Keith (Cathy) Johannes of Seattle, Wash., Ann (Ron) Searcy of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kay (Brad) Hess of Bertram; and five grandchildren, Eric Johannes of San Diego, Calif., Elizabeth (fiance Chris Hidalgo) Searcy of Phoenix, Ariz., Kathryn Searcy of New Orleans, La., Jessica Hess of Bertram and Elliot Hess of Bertram.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
