Jensen, Evelyn 'Evie' M.
Evelyn “Evie” M. Jensen, 95, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Iowa City Mercy Hospice after a long illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery. Father John Spiegel will officiate. (Sunday Parking Only ordinance will be in effect for the funeral Monday.) Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service, with a parish vigil at 3 p.m. and a family rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Regina Foundation for tuition assistance or Birthright of Iowa City.
Evelyn was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Mary E. “Nellie” Volk and William Seydel. She graduated from Cosgrove High School. On March 31, 1936, she married Aage Jensen.
She worked as a cook at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for one year and later at Regina High School for 15 years, retiring in 1982. Evelyn was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for over 70 years, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and St. Mary's Altar & Rosary Society. She volunteered for Birthright of Iowa City for 20 years.
Survivors include her sons, Jim and his wife, Mary Ellen, Dick and his wife, Debbie, Chuck Jensen and Jerry Jensen, all of Iowa City; a daughter-in-law, Pat “Trish” Jensen of Iowa City; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brothers, Dale Seydel and Bob Seydel, both of Iowa City, sisters, Dorothy of Parkston, S.D., and Bonnie Ball of Tiffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven brothers; a sister; two sons, Bill and Tom; a daughter, Julie; and a granddaughter, Jeanne.
