JEANNE MARIE STOVER
Vienna, Va.
Jeanne Marie Granzow Stover, 94, of Vienna, Va., passed away at her home on Oct. 30, 2021. The cause of death was Lewy Body Dementia and other complications of advanced age.
Jeanne Marie Granzow Stover was born on Jan. 21, 1927, just outside of Alden, Iowa, in a big, beautiful farmhouse that was built by her grandfather and her great-grandfather. She was the only living child
of William Charles Granzow and Genevieve Marie Dillon Granzow.
Her childhood was spent with her parents on the farm and with friends and extended family, including a large group of cousins, who lived in the surrounding community. She graduated from Alden High School in 1944, and from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1948 with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Music. During her college summers, she worked as a camp counselor at Camp Waziyatah in Harrison, Maine.
After graduating from college, Jeanne spent one year teaching fifth grade at an elementary school in Cherokee, Iowa before moving to the Lincoln School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then taught elementary music to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at the Van Buren School in Cedar Rapids, where she remained teaching until the early 1960's.
In Cedar Rapids she met Harris Stover, an engineer at Collins Radio Company. They were married in Marshalltown, Iowa on July 24, 1954. They were married for 64 years and had one daughter.
After retiring from teaching, Jeanne was an active member of several organizations in Cedar Rapids, including the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and PEO. She was an active member and choir participant at her church, Westminster Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed socializing with Harris's friends from Collins and their wives, affectionately known as "Warren's Wives Club," referring to a supervisor at Collins.
In 1974, she moved with her family to Vienna, Virginia, where she became active in organizations including PEO and Vienna Presbyterian Church (VPC). She was a choir member and children's choir director at VPC for many, many years.
She was an avid sports fan, and she loved watching and cheering for her beloved Washington, D.C. teams, including the Washington Redskins and the Washington Nationals. She and Harris also were big fans of the Iowa college teams, including the football and basketball teams at Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.
Jeanne and Harris loved attending performances at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. They spent many happy evenings attending a variety of performances, and they loved bringing their family with them.
She also loved spending time with her family. She and Harris traveled to Iowa every summer for family reunions, and she attended reunions with her cousins every few years. She especially loved spending time with her three grandchildren.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Sarah Stover Jones (Brian Jones), of Annandale, Va.; and her grandchildren, Caroline Grace, Aidan Michael and Mary Katherine Jones all of Annandale, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harris Addean Stover.
