Jean Stamy Sobek, 99, of Westfield, Indiana, passed away on April 24, 2024. The daughter of Elmer and Edith Lutz Stamy, she was born on January 17, 1925, at her maternal grandparent’s farm on the corner of Blairs Ferry Road and Center Point Road, which is now a part of Hiawatha, Iowa. She was raised on the Stamy Heritage Farm in Robins. Jean graduated from Marion High School in 1942 and the University of Iowa in 1945, where she was a member of Tri Delta Sorority, Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa. After college, she was employed by IBM Corporation until her marriage to Joseph J. Sobek on September 3, 1949, as at that time IBM would not employee married women.
Jean and Joe became residents of Hammond and Munster, Indiana, where their children were born and raised.
Jean is survived by one son and two daughters: Joseph (Suzi) Sobek of Carmel, Ind., Carol (James) Hyde of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. Christine Sobek (Paul Anderson) of Geneva, Ill. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and a sister and brother, Mary Susan Taylor of Solon, and Donald Stamy of Cedar Rapids. S
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother, Dr. Richard Stamy.
She was active in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Munster and an 80 year member of the Marion, Iowa, Eastern Star Chapter.
Burial will be at a later date in Hammond.
