Jean Frances Smith, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, April 16, 2021, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A private funeral service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Following the continued guidance from health officials, physical distancing must be practiced, which requires a limited number of people allowed into the visitation at one time. The use of face masks or shields is required.
Jean was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Francis N. and Mildred R. (Swick) Benest. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1951. She was united in marriage to Robert Smith on April 29, 1972, in Marion, Iowa. Jean worked for Collins Radio, later Rockwell Collins, retiring after 38 years of service. Jean loved to cross-stitch. She enjoyed golfing and enjoyed traveling and golfing at many destinations over the years. Jean also liked to bowl and participated in bowling leagues for many years. She was an excellent cook and never needed a recipe to make so much delicious food over the years.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Connie Janzan of Marion. She is also survived by her cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Robert, in 2019; and her brotherm Mark Benest.
