Jean A. Petrzelka, 86, died Nov. 6, 2015, at Hallmar Care Center, Mercy Medical Center, from complications with Alzheimer's disease after a six-year struggle.
She was born March 2, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Norbert and Francis (Votavia) Zobl. Her mother was an immigrant from Czechoslovakia at the age of 3.
Jean married John (Ray) Petrzekla on Oct. 29, 1949, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They met at Roosevelt High School where Ray excelled in all four major sports. He had a successful baseball career with the Cleveland Indians after his graduation from Notre Dame, where he was co-captain.
She always kept active being a member of the church and resurrection choir at St. Matthew Catholic Church, a Eucharistic minister, St. Monica's Circle, volunteer at Mercy Medical Center, Serenaders Club, Twin Pines and Ellis Park ladies golf leagues, Archbishop's Circle of Xavier High School and Notre Dame Honor Club.
She leaves no family, but has many dear friends, including Liz Valliere, Jean Zobl and Judy Wilkin.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; son, Michael; brother, Richard; and her parents.
Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Beckman and the Rev. Gerald Condon co-celebrating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial is in Czech National Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic Church, Xavier High School, Camp Courageous, Notre Dame and Hospice of Mercy.
