Jean Marie Dolezal Brutsman, 94, of Ely, died Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Mercy Hallmar. Celebration of Life gathering will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St., SW. Private family
Inurnment will be in Rogers Grove Cemetery near Ely.
Jean was born Nov. 2, 1926, in rural Ely, the daughter of Alois "Louis" Frank and Julia Louise (Mrstik) Dolezal. She graduated from Ely High School. Following she attended Cedar Rapids Business School, Coe College and Kirkwood where she earned an A.A.S. degree. Jean married her sweetie, Donald Clyde Brutsman on July 6, 1948, at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely. She worked as a secretary at Penick & Ford, acted as Postmaster with Ely Postal Office, assisted seniors with job placement through Greenthumb Inc., and was the Field Operations Assistant for many years of the family farm. Jean and Don farmed together for over 54 years in the Ely area. Together Jean and Don enjoyed square dancing, snowmobiling and celebrating her Czech heritage. Jean was a member of WFLA, Ely Legion Auxiliary, TOPS Club Chapter 259 since 1971, where she earned The International Queen Award in 1973, Ely and Fairfax Friendship Clubs, The Lunch Bunch, along with a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ely and Our Lord's Church in Solon. Her many hobbies included being a lifelong learner, reading, genealogy, playing the accordion, gardening, dining out and doing computer research. Jean was a tremendous cook and enjoyed entertaining her friends and family.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Lynne (Don) Brokaw; her grandchildren, Josh (Mary) Boots, Jake Boots, Nan Brokaw and Melinda (Kevin Posekany) Brokaw; her great-grandchildren, Charlotte Boots, Harrison Boots, Lindsay (Adam) Szurkowski, Emily and Ben LaGrange, and Nate and Nick Posekany; a brother, John Dolezal; her son-in-law, Lester (Leanne) Boots; her daughter-in-law, Ann Ruppenkamp; as well as her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over 54 years, Don; her infant sister, Doris Dolezal; her daughter, Susan Brutsman-Boots; and great-grandson, Emmett Boots.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society of Linn County or to the American Heart Association of Linn County in her name.
