Jean was born on May 23, 1936, in Gunder, Iowa, the daughter of John Chris and Ellen Christina (Olson) Johansen. She grew up in Lamont, Iowa, and graduated from Starmont High School in Strawberry Point, Iowa. She moved to Chicago, Ill., and worked for the CB&Q Railroad. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Garie William Duncan. They were united in marriage on Sept. 14, 1957, in Strawberry Point. To this union two children were born, Lisa and Mark.
Jean and Garie lived in Iowa City, Iowa, before moving to Marion, where they started the W. Truss Company in 1964. Years later, Jean started her career in real estate, working for Caldwell Banker. Following the death of her husband, Garie, Jean lived in San Jose, Calif., and Denver, Colo., before returning to Marion in 2016.

Jean is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Lisa Duncan (Billy Kennerly) of Englewood, Colorado; son, Mark Duncan (Tracy Brooks) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; granddaughter, Haile Duncan; sister, Karen Fisher of San Jose, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
