Jean Rae Cook, 87, died peacefully Jan. 27, 2017, at 5:10 p.m., with her three children at her bedside, following a 17-year battle with cancer.
Jean was born March 24, 1929, in Anamosa, Iowa, where she lived until moving to Cedar Rapids in 2013. Her parents were Raymond F. and Clara (Larson) Cole. She was married June 5, 1949, to her high school sweetheart, Leo Cook. She graduated from Anamosa High School in 1947. Jean worked for the Anamosa Community School District at Strawberry Hill Elementary Library until her retirement in 2006.
Jean was an avid reader, and working in the library gave her an opportunity to share this passion with countless students. She was a passionate sports fan, devoted mother and consummate grandmother.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband; parents; infant daughter, Janet; daughter, Debra (Glenn) Phillips of Marion; two sisters, Eleanor (Robert) Day of Portland, Ore., and Lois (Stan) Waldron of Keokuk; and brother, Ed (Pat) Lubben of Anamosa.
Jean is survived by sons, Perry Cook of New York, N.Y., and Brian (Susan Richards) Cook of Iowa City; daughter, Diann (Steve) Peak of Marion; grandchildren, Jason (Sophie) Cook of St. Louis, Mo., Brendan Cook and Matthew Kim-Cook of New York, Jared Cook of Washington, D.C., Joshua Cook of Chicago, Kyla (Nate) Steinbronn, Matthew (Riley) Peak, Danny and Hallie Peak of Marion, Adam Phillips of Des Moines, Allen (Nicole) Phillips of Marion and Andy (Emily) Phillips of Iowa City; brothers, Jim (Maureen) Lubben of Boston, Mass., and John (Pat) Lubben of Newton; along with five great-grandchildren and one on the way and several nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at a later date with burial in Wilcox Cemetery, Anamosa.
