JAY STEIN
Iowa City
Jay Stein, 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2014. A time of sharing will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City, with a reception to
follow.
Jay was born Aug. 13, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Arthur and Helen Stein. He was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill., and the University of Iowa, where he earned a B.A., M.A., and a juris doctor. Jay was engaged in private practice in Iowa City for 37 years and served as a magistrate judge for the sixth judicial district court from 2009 to 2014.
Jay was a man of elegance, charm, wit and great compassion. All who knew Jay found a man who was a dapper dresser and had perhaps the greatest supply of suspenders in the state of Iowa.
He was a collector of friends, an active member of the Iowa City theatre community and a devoted husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, David Stein of Iowa City (Nicole Smith) and Araan Schmidt of Grand Junction, Colo. (Jamie Bardsley); grandson, Arlo Schmidt; and brother, Arthur Stein of Bethesda, Md. (Wendy Danziger).
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family extends their deep gratitude to Jay's physicians, Dr. Tom Novak and Dr. Joe Truzskowski and to Iowa City Hospice for their most excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Iowa City Community Theatre or Iowa City Hospice.
