Jason "Jake" Wayne Smith, 44, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at St. Luke's Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015. Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Marion, with Pastor Steve Qualben officiating. The family will greet friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Per the family's wishes, please wear your Hawkeye or favorite sports team apparel to the visitation. A private graveside service at Urbana Memorial Cemetery will take place at a later date.
Jason Wayne Smith was born Jan. 12, 1971, in Cedar Rapids, to his parents Delmar and Marcia (Waldorf) Smith. Jake graduated from Center Point-Urbana High School in 1989. He received his bachelor's degree from UNI in 1993. Jake married Angie Dolan in 2006. He was employed at Rockwell Collins.
Jake is survived by his wife, Angie; and his children, Carlee, Kelsi and Travis Smith, all of Cedar Rapids; his parents, Delmar and Marcia Smith of Center Point; his sister, Darcie Smith (Kenny McKeighan) of Council Bluffs; his mother- and father-in-law, Jim and Linda Dolan of Manchester; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Sean (Sara) Dolan of Masonville, Erin (John) Olson of Shenandoah, Mark (Beth) Dolan of Masonville, Timothy (Jana) Dolan of Wauwatosa, Wis., and David Dolan (Kaylea Stanley) of Champaign, Ill.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Merwin "Bud" and Vanita Smith; and his maternal grandparents, Neil and Kathy Waldorf.
Jake thoroughly enjoyed following his kids' sporting events. He was an avid sports fan, particularly the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Cubs and the Cowboys.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Jake's name has been established.
