Janice Mary Duncalf, 86, of Newhall, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 12, 2025, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall with Father Jacob Dunne officiating. The family will greet friends at the church from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery near Van Horne.
Janice was born at home in rural Newhall on December 23, 1938, to Leo and Carolyn (Davis) Boddicker. She excelled in academics, was involved with 4-H, played piano, and was an All-State soprano who sang in many weddings in her early years.
On November 24, 1955, she was united in marriage to Harold Duncalf at St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall. The couple farmed in the Newhall/Shellsburg area and raised five children.
Janice went on to later attend Kirkwood Community College, graduating in 1988 with a degree as a medical records technician. Cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes was a favorite pastime for her in person and watching on TV, both basketball teams and football. An avid reader and listener of music, she liked autobiographies and concerts of many genres. She enjoyed being outdoors, tending to her garden (especially tomatoes for canning), planting beautiful flowers in her yard, and taking care of the farm dogs over the years. She loved attending her children's activities, going to many cross country and track meets, band and vocal concerts, plays, and 4-H events, including the Iowa State Fair.
She is survived by her children, Kevin (Darcy) Duncalf of Long Grove, Denise (Robert) Thomas of Davenport, Camille McGuire of Clive, Doria (Daniel) Knebel of Iowa City, and Maria Duncalf of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Jill, Jenna, and Cole Duncalf, Nathan Dvorak, Neil McGuire, Drew McGuire, Carsyn Knebel and Max Knebel; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita (Ron) Johnson, Diantha (Nolan) Zadra, Rosalie (Bob) Jahn; sister-in-law, Pat (Jim) Russell; brother-in-law, Dick Jacobi; in-laws Karen Duncalf, Don (Marilyn) Duncalf, Ruthann (Dale) Froehlich, Carol Kindl, Mary Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband in 2015; her parents; brother, Vincent Boddicker; sisters, LaVonne Boddicker, Marilyn Scheib Freytag, Lola Jacobi, and Charlotte Boddicker; in-laws Delbert, Agnes, Rozella, and Ronnie Duncalf; and her nieces and nephews, Angela Scheib, Adam Boddicker, Aaron Jahn, Nolan Duncalf, and Darla Conway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall or the Newhall Lions Club.
