JANICE LEE
Iowa City
Janice C. "Jan" Lee, 83, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visi-tation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, Iowa City Hospice or the Jan Lee Memorial Fund.
Jan was born March 10, 1931, in Osage, Iowa, to Francis E. "Gene" and Helen (Clow) Cromer. She was a graduate of Mason City High School and attended Grinnell College. Jan received her degree in political science from the University of Iowa. She worked for the Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago before returning to Iowa City. Jan married Richard W. "Dick" Lee Jr. on Feb. 12, 1955, at St Patrick's rectory.
Jan worked for the ASC for several attorneys during the tax season, and finally at the job she loved – records supervisor for the Johnson County Sheriff's Department.
In her younger years, Jan was active in Girl Scouts, serving as a counselor at a camp in Clear Lake. She achieved the highest ranking in scouting and was later a troop co-leader in Iowa City. In Grinnell, she was active in intramural sports, playing softball, volleyball and basketball. She also bowled and was in a ladies league at Colonial Lanes.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, and liked watching NFL and Hawkeye football and basketball. Her favorite TV programs were a source of humor to her family as they included "Dog the Bounty Hunter," "World Series of Poker" and "Hell's Kitchen."
She and Dick enjoyed watching their grand-children participate in a wide assortment of sports and other school activities. She loved talking to her grandchildren about anything and everything, especially sports.
The family extends their appreciation to the "family" at Crestview Care Center for providing a home away from home filled with love, support and caring hands, and to Iowa City Hospice for providing Jan the opportunity to make choices based on her wishes through the final days of her life.
She hopes to be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who had a wicked sense of humor, a real interest in the lives of her family, and high hopes for them all.
Jan is survived by three daughters, Ellen Lee-Andino, Terry (Tom) Parker and Kelly Lee, all of Iowa City; her son, Rick (Kathy) of North Liberty; her grandchildren, Chris Andino (Paige Schaffter), Jon Andino and Nic Andino, Sara (Tom) Early, Chad Parker, Derek Parker, Ricky Lee, Lindsey Lee, Tim Lee and Emily Lee; two stepgrand-children, Joe Mooney and Shelly (Ben) Sweeting; three great-grandchildren, Zoe Andino, Julian Andino and Brooklyn Petersen; four stepgreat-grand-children, Thacher and Scarlett Mooney and Caiden and Landen Sweeting; her sister-in-law, Marian Lee of Riverside; special friend, confidant, "sister" and roommate at Crestview, Grace Olmsted; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick, in 2004; brothers-in-law, Bob, Bill and Jack Lee; two sisters-in-law, Marge Lee and Pat Lee; and a niece, Jamie Lee.
