Janette Ames, 85, of Hiawatha, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Philip Thompson. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Janette is survived by four children, Sue Young and Ruth (Gary) Finney, both Cedar Rapids, Joel (Nena) Ames of Hiawatha and Luke (Ela) Ames of Velden am Worthersee, Austria; brother, Elmer (Sheryl) Nissen of Wyoming, Iowa; sister, Ann (Jim) Eby of Monticello; 14 grandchildren, Ken, Calvin, Ethan (Tara), Andrew and Stephen Young, Senya (Douglas) Joerss, Laina (Jeremy) Sevey, Riley Finney, Mason, Reece, Conner, Adriana, Helena and Felicitas Ames; four great-grandchildren, Tucker, Lilian, Brayden and Noah Young; brother-in-law, Charles Ames of Titusville, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Jean Ames of Erie, Pa., and Connie Nissen of Maquoketa; and many nieces and nephews.
Janette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil; three sons, Paul, Stephen and Kenneth; and brother, John.
Janette was born Dec. 4, 1931, in Hale, Iowa, the daughter of Jens and Ruth Dodge Nissen. She married Virgil Ames on June 12, 1954, at St. Stephen's Church in Oil City, Pa. Janette worked as a housekeeper at St. Luke's Hospital, then as a cook at Bowman Woods Elementary for many years.
She was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the church's prayer group. Janette's family would like to thank Lisa and Jim Gignac for always making sure she was able to attend.
Janette enjoyed playing Yahtzee, baking bread and fruitcakes and watching "The Price is Right" and "Wheel of Fortune." She was a very hardworking, selfless and generous woman who had an unconditional love for her family.
