Janet K. Wernke, 69, of Dyersville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave. SW, Dyersville, where a parish vigil service will be held at 2 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.
Janet was born July 4, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Lerch) Middlekauff. She married Robert J. Wernke on Feb. 7, 1970, in Anamosa. Janet had a soft smile and would do anything for anyone. She was a strong fighter and never gave up trying. In her spare time, Janet liked reading, bingo, socializing, traveling and trying something new. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, yardwork, babysitting and decorating at the Ellen Kennedy Living Center. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Janet worked as a customer service representative in banking in Dyersville for over 30 years. She was an active member of the Dyersville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dyersville Hospital Auxiliary, where she served as treasurer for 12 years.
Survivors include her husband, Bob; children, Angela (Matthew) Trenkamp of Iowa City, Brian (Kristen) Wernke of Farley and Sara (Brad) Slater of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Anna, Brayden, Brynnleigh, Brooklynn, Brevyn, Max, Jackson and Daisy; one brother, James (Clare) Middlekauff of Orlando, Fla.; in-laws, David (Bernie) Wernke of Worthington, Marian (Thomas) Noblit of Loretto, Tenn., Joan Klein of Durango and Ruth (Rick) Ruden of Cresco; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, John and Odelia (Zewen) Wernke; one son, Douglas Wernke, in 2012; and in-laws, Roger (Anna Mae) Wernke and Don Klein.
Memorials are preferred to St. Francis Xavier Basilica.
