Janet Louise Toom, 78, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Salem, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, at UnityPoint Hospice in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at New Covenant Bible Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, Marion.
Janet is survived by her husband, James; children, Nancy (Ken) White of West Des Moines, Susan (Dave) Helm of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and David Toom of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; mother, Alice Williams of Sebring, Ohio; and sister, Judy (Wayne) Erbes of Cheektowaga, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, David Shafer.
Janet was born Jan. 20, 1938, in Salem, Ohio, the daughter of John and Jean (Binsley) Williams. She married James Charles Toom on July 25, 1998. Janet worked as a nurse at Breckenridge Care Center in Willoughby, Ohio, and then for Dr. James Utter.
She was a volunteer for UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital and a member of New Covenant Bible Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of Ed and Joan Hemphill UnityPoint Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Janet.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to New Covenant Bible Church or the Ed and Joan Hemphill UnityPoint Hospice unit at St. Luke's Hospital.
