Janet Block, 60, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 19, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held on May 24 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Janet Lynn Block was born on Aug. 15, 1956, in Fargo, N.D., the daughter of Don and Joyce Schmidt. She lived the majority of her life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she graduated from Washington High School and Coe College, with a degree in psychology. She devoted much of her time to service, including assisting at elementary schools, volunteering at extracurricular events for her children, driving for Riders Club, and working as a hospice companion. She was known for never missing a sporting or music event her children were involved in. While not giving to others, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, socializing with friends, and spending time with her granddaughter, Maddie.
She was preceded in death by her father, Don Schmidt.
Left to carry on her spirit include her husband of 33 years, Rich Block; mother, Joyce Schmidt; daughter, Lauren (Colin) Smith; son, Jason (Maria) Block; granddaughter, Madelyn Smith; and brothers, Steve (Mark Downing) Schmidt and Jim Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contribution be made in Janet's honor to the Indian Creek Nature Center or directly to her family.
