Janet A. Stier, 95, of Iowa City, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, June 5, 2025, after a tender good-bye with her family.
Jan was born November 14, 1929 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Bess Rohwer. She attended Carthage College where she met and married her husband, James P. Stier on June 17, 1950. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage.
She relished her years as a legal secretary at Meardon, Sueppel, Downer and Hayes, and gave her volunteer talents to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, University of Iowa Hospitals, University Club, PEO and the Rock and Read program. But her greatest joy was time with family and friends.
She delighted in opening her home, with generous hospitality, a cheerful disposition, a listening ear and some of the best cooking you will ever experience, including her world-renowned pancakes (dubbed by the family as “Jan-cakes”.) Deeply loved by her family and friends, we will miss her boisterous laugh, fierce loyalty, deep resilience and kind heart.
Survivors include three children: Jeff (Mary) of Clive, Iowa, Julie and Joe Stier of Iowa City; five grandchildren: Ryan and Emma Stier, Toby, Sean and Chase (Alejandra) Hamer and nieces, Jeanne and Joyce. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; her sister, Beverly Sanderson and niece, Janet.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends from 10-11:00 a.m. and a luncheon at the church will follow the service. Family graveside services will be held at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Systems Unlimited or Essence of Life Hospice.
