Jane Elizabeth Ommen, 80, of Iowa City, died Monday, May 30, 2022, at the Bird House-Hospice Home of Johnson County.
Jane was born Feb. 18, 1942, at the John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Gerhardt and Dorothy (Hance) Ommen.
She was raised in rural Langworthy. Jane was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. She received her education with Monticello Schools, graduating with the Monticello High School Class of 1960.
After graduation, Jane moved to Cedar Rapids, working for United Fire Group for several years.
Jane then made her home in Iowa City and attended the University of Iowa, singing with the Old Gold Singers, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.
Following graduation, Jane began her lifelong career until retirement as an account specialist for the University of Iowa Information Technology Services.
After the death of her father Gerhardt, her mother Dorothy moved to Iowa City in 1975, to be near her daughter. Throughout those years, Jane and her mother enjoyed many bus trips throughout the United States. Jane also enjoyed listening to music and reading.
In later years, when her mother’s health declined, Jane was a wonderful caregiver to her.
Jane’s faith was strong and she attended church weekly. She was a former member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and was currently an active and faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Jane is survived by her brother, Gerry Ommen, Elkader; nephews and niece, Erik (Adriana) Ommen, Laredo, Texas; Karl (Deborah) Ommen, Strawberry Point; Scott Ommen, Hiawatha; Karen (Kevin) Yock, Cedar Rapids; great-nieces, Gabrielle, Jacqueline and Monique Ommen, all of Texas; several cousins; and many close friends whom she considered her family.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Gerhardt and Dorothy Ommen; a brother, Robert Ommen, and a sister-in-law, Luanne Ommen.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Zion Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with Pastor Jennifer Lutz officiating. Private family inurnment: St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Monticello, Iowa.
