James Edwin Woods, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein at a later date.
James was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Ryan, Iowa, the son of John and Sadie (Burke) Woods. He graduated from Randalia High School in Fayette County. James served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1954. He married Patricia Ann Kirby on Oct. 8, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. She passed away in August 2017. James worked as a delivery driver for Colonial Bakery in Oelwein. In 1968, the family moved to Cedar Rapids and James worked at Quaker Oaks for 25 years before he retired. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. James loved fishing, and his favorite breakfast spot was the Collins Road Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids.
James is survived by his children, Edmund Woods, Anne Woods and Mary (David) Edaburn, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Kirby and Jack Edaburn; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Woods of Oelwein and Judy Woods of Dyersville; brother-in-law, Sheldon Fox of Oelwein; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Woods; parents, John and Sadie Woods; son, John Woods; and siblings, Margaret (Tom) Henry, Don (Lola Jean) Woods, Paul (Carolee) Woods, Betty Fox, Tom Woods and Leo Woods.
A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Samuel Wood and the entire staff at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, Cedar Rapids, for their compassionate care for James.
