James F. "Jim" Wonick, 71, of Iowa City, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
A gathering for family and friends to remember Jim will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. A thought, memory or condolence can be shared with his family through the funeral home website at www.gayandciha.com.
James Fran Wonick was born April 17, 1945, in Rome, Ga., the son of Elzear K. and Helen E. (Yordi) Wonick. When he was a child, the family moved to Iowa City, where Jim attended schools, graduating from City High School. He married Joan Carol Stallfort on May 15, 1965. For over 42 years, Jim worked for the city of Iowa City at Oakland Cemetery, where he retired as supervisor. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, hated being inside and was crazy passionate about racing, going to race tracks all across the country.
His family includes his son, James "Bryan" Wonick, and his fiancee, Debbie Pugesok; granddaughters, Ashlin and Samantha Wonick; and sister and her husband, Joyce and Allen Eakes. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joan.
