JAMES HENRY SMITTKAMP

James Henry Smittkamp, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Jan. 22, 2017. He was known for his kindness, humor and zest for life.
Jim was born in Vinton, Iowa, on Feb. 19, 1925, to Carl and Leora Smittkamp. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in France. After graduating from Upper Iowa College, he married LeAnne Gleason in 1951. Jim worked as an inspector for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He served more than 50 years with the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
Jim was deeply loved by his family, which includes his children: Terry Smittkamp (Diane) of Duluth, Ga., Chad Smittkamp of Lake Tahoe, Nev., Leah Noelle (Kirk) of Waterloo and Robin Hobbs (Charles) of Everson, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, and sons, Jimmy and Matthew.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
