James Walter Schlotfelt, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at his home. Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
James was born May 11, 1929, the son of John and Pearl (Gillam) Schlotfelt, in Vinton, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, from 1951 to 1953. He then went on to serve with the Army Reserve for eight years.
On Aug. 11, 1951, he was married to Ardella Knoop in Dysart, Iowa. She passed away in 2010. James was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa men's basketball. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and Hope Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his four children, James "Skip" Schlotfelt, Rodney (Teresa) Schlotfelt, Joni (Rick) Kern and Lon (Teresa Ann) Schlotfelt; five grandchildren, Anne (Jason) Sopousek, Daniel (Shannon Walters) Kern, Nathan (Melissa) Schlotfelt, Rachel (Andrew Schumacher) Schlotfelt and Leah (Jared) Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Patrick Sopousek and Jade Schlotfelt; sister, Joanne Campbell; brother, Don Schlotfelt; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and daughter-in-law, Debbi Schlotfelt.
