James Randolph Kane, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died Sunday, September 7, 2025. Visitation: Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Murdoch-Linwood in Cedar Rapids from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass officiated by Rev. Kenneth Glaser at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour prior. Burial: Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Petersville, Iowa. The funeral mass will be livestreamed at www.stludmila.org.
Jim was born on December 9, 1935, in What Cheer, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Sarah (McCarty) Kane. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1953 and went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1954-1957. Jim was united in marriage to Helene McDermott from 1958-2000 and together they raised five children. Following Helene’s death, Jim married Shirley Maloney McEowen in 2001 and they enjoyed nearly twenty years of marriage until her death.
Jim worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than thirty years, retiring in 1996, and later spent twenty years as a shuttle driver at the Eastern Iowa Airport. Jim was a proud member of the National Association of Letter Carriers where he served as both the local and state president. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW and Knights of Columbus. Jim was a devoted parishioner of St. Ludmila parish for more than sixty-five years and was active in the Parish Council, Booster Club, Kolache Festival, and coaching.
Jim was devoted to his Catholic faith, treasured his family and friends, and was known for his Irish wit. He always saw the best in others and cherished life’s blessings.
Survivors include his children, Terrence Kane of Phoenix, Arizona, Ann Ketelsen of Cedar Rapids, Mary (David) Betsill of Palm Coast, Florida, Jean (Joseph) Graff of Denver, Colorado, and Michael (Shauna) Kane of Cedar Rapids, 12 grand/great-grandchildren, sister Margaret Cejka of Cedar Rapids, and Shirley’s children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Sarah Kane, wives Helene and Shirley, siblings Patrick, Eugene, John, and Jane Kane, Mary Bousselot, and Kathleen Campbell, son-in-law Thomas Ketelsen, and grandson Adam Kane.
