JAMES E. OWEN
Cedar Rapids
James E. Owen, 83, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Jan. 11, 2016, in Hendersonville, N.C. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at Cedar Hills Community Church, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation at 10 a.m. His ashes will be buried at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; her sons, Jim and Jeff; and Dot's seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Josifek, Cedar Rapids, Brenda (Steve) Hanson, the Villages, Fla., and Dr. Marcia (Dave) Miller, Savannah, Ga.; grandchildren, Tony Josifek, Jana Chesley, Natalie Crain, and Glen and Greg Hanson; great-granddaughters, Sydney, Cora and Olivia; and his ex-wife, Sara Owen of Davenport.
Born Feb. 3, 1932, to Edwin and Vera (Robinson) Owen, in Cedar Rapids, he graduated from McKinley High School and married Sara Sare in 1951. They were divorced in 1989; to that union four daughters were born. In 1996, Jim married Dorothy Rabe in Venice, Fla.
Jim was the general manager of Standard Appliance Company in Cedar Rapids. The business was started by his father, Edwin, in 1926, as Standard Tire in downtown Cedar Rapids. After Standard Appliance closed in 1976, Jim was employed in sales. He was a true salesman, as he could talk to anyone about anything. He golfed enthusiastically since his teenage years and loved his family dearly. He will be missed. He was a former member of Cedar Christian Church, where he served as elder.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ann Owen; grandson, Timothy Josifek; and his sisters, Darlene, Waneta and Barbara.
