James Onnen, 72, of Iowa City, died on Monday, July 9, 2018, at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Family and friends are welcome to a Celebration of Life which will be held with service color guard at American Legion Post 17, Muscatine Ave., Iowa City, on Sunday, July 29, at noon.
James was born on Sept. 23, 1945, in Iowa City, the son of Chris J. and Wilma (Hatfield) Onnen. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a patriot and loved this country. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Reserves for many years.
James is survived by his sons, Zachary (Mariuxi) Onnen and their son, Mathias, of Coralville, and Christopher Onnen of Kalona; his brother, Donal (Cindy) Onnen of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chris J. and Wilma Onnen; and a brother, Leo Onnen.
