James Richard Nagel, 68, of Lancaster, Mo., passed away at his home unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015.
The son of John Bernard and Madge Louise (LaChapelle) Nagel, he was born on Nov. 6, 1946, in Monticello, Iowa. He was a 1965 graduate of the Central City High School in Central City, Iowa. Jim served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army from 1965 until 1968, when he received an honorable discharge. During this time, he was a mechanic and drove a wrecker. Following his time in the service, he worked for L.C. Howe. In 1970, he went into partnership with Waldo Morris to form M & N Construction laying water lines until 1998.
On June 1, 1968, he was united in marriage to Josephine Haley and to this union three children were born, Darrel Lee, Barbara Jo and James Aaron (Clyde). On Aug. 16, 2003, in Unionville, Mo., he was united to Laurie (Wuertz) Winkler.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Laurie Nagel of Lancaster, Mo.; three children, Darrel Nagel and wife Kelly of Kansas City, Mo., and their children, Jacie, Grant, Kiley and Haley Nagel; Barbara Shumaker and husband Seth of Brashear, Mo., and their son, Reagan; and Clyde Nagel and wife Lisa of Lancaster, and their son, Spencer; two stepchildren, Jacob Winkler of Des Moines and Nicole Winkler of Columbia, Mo.; brothers and sisters include Joe Nagel and wife Marlene of Central City, John Nagel and wife Shirley of Antigo, Wis., Janice Larson and husband Don of Amana, Jane Thompson and husband Ron of Davis City, Jeanette Strong of Cedar Rapids and Jerry Nagel and wife Marlene of Cedar Rapids; one brother-in-law, Matt Haley and wife Beth of Lancaster, and their children, Mallory, Daniel, Megan and Madison; numerous nieces and nephews; other family members; and many good friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and three grandsons, including twins, Shelton Lee and Sawyer Ray Nagel and Seth Lincoln Nagel.
Jim was a faithful member of the St. John's Lutheran Church of Queen City, Mo.
Jim enjoyed his grandchildren and loved them dearly. He loved when his brothers, Marlene and the kids came down from Iowa to go fishing, going Sprint car racing, farming and taking care of his cows! He will be missed dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Schuyler County Church of Faith in Lancaster, Mo., with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Music will be CD selections of "Remember When" and "Tears In Heaven." Pallbearers will be David Stump, Darren Paustian, Brian Paustian, Daniel Haley, Ron Coleman and Walt Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be Dane Stump, David Daniels, Drew Paustian, Mason Paustian, Adam Rundall, Spencer Nagel, Grant Nagel and Reagan Shumaker. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Mo. Burial will be in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Mo., with full military honors.
Memorials have been established for Jim's grandchildren or to the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital in Columbia, Mo.
