Jim died Tuesday morning, Jan. 5, 2016, at White Pine Assisted Living and Memory Care in Blaine, Minn. He was moved there from Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Tipton on Sept. 1, 2015, to be closer to his family, but continued believing in his heart that he was still in Tipton, a place he loved dearly.
The son of Lewis and Margaret (Frink) Moore, he was born March 17, 1921, in Fairfield Township, rural Tipton. He grew up on a farm north of Tipton, attended Prairie Flower Rural Grade School, and graduated from Tipton High School in 1938. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for two years and American Institute of Commerce in Davenport for one year.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving overseas on the USS Columbia in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1945.
During that time, he married Susan Lucile Fagan in Tipton on March 5, 1944. Together they raised four children – Richard, Linda, Mary Anne and Colleen. Upon returning from military service, he began working at Tipton State Bank as a bookkeeper and retired in 1986 after serving 18 years as president and chairman of the board.
His wife, Lucile, passed away in February 1972. He was later remarried to Phyllis Meyer Conrad in 1973, with whom he was with for 30 years until her death in 2003.
His children were his pride and joy. He enjoyed visits to see them as well as his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
He was busy throughout his life as a member of St. Mary's Church, Rotary, VFW, American Legion, Lions Club and Cedar County fair board. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, visiting with friends and gardening.
He is survived by his daughter, Colleen (Ralph) Wilson of Baudette, Minn.; grandchildren, Ian (Jennifer) Suchomel, Eric (Rachel) Wilson, Tom (Monica) Wilson, Dani (Todd) Elgas and Caite (Tim) Flaherty; great- grandchildren, Emma and Charlie Suchomel, Charlotte, Camila, Violet and Gabriela Wilson, Tyler and Addison Elgas and Mora Flaherty; stepgrandchildren, Garrett and Karsen Elgas; son-in-law, Jim Suchomel; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Moore; niece-in-law, Donna Gault; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both spouses; his son, Richard; daughters, Linda and Mary; a half sister, Berdina Gault; a nephew, Franklin Gault; and daughter-in-law, Ginny (Anderson) Moore.
A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Proceeds may be directed to Cedar Manor Nursing Home and Cedar County Senior Center.
