James "Jim" R. Mitchell, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, following a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home by the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home
Jim is survived by six children, John Mitchell of Del Ray Beach, Fla., Nancy Mitchell, Susan Mitchell, Lee Ann (Carl Harn) Mitchell and Mark Mitchell, all of Cedar Rapids, and Mike Mitchell of Laguna Beach, Calif.; eight granddaughters; a sister, Pat (Norm) Nicholson of Finely, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Napier of Dayton, Ohio, and Susie Harris of Vandalia, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; parents; and an infant grandson, Alexander Mitchell.
James was born April 17, 1928, in Washington Court House, Ohio, the son of Floyd and Medrith Mitchell. He married Margie A. Bivins on March 14, 1954. in Vandalia, Ohio. Jim was a pilot for Cole Layer Trumble Company in Vandalia, Ohio, before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1978. In 1992, Jim retired as chief pilot for Amana Refrigeration. He served as a Navy mechanic from 1946 to 1953.
James enjoyed fishing, sewing and cooking and always looked forward to fishing with his friends and brother-in-law, Virgil, in Canada. He will be remembered for his love of tinkering and being very handy when things needed to be fixed.
Memorials may be given to Saint Paul's United Methodist Church or Hospice of Mercy.
