James "Jim" J. McCracken, 98, a resident of Higley Mansion Care Center, Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, May 30, 2015. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev.
David Beckman. The family will greet friends one hour before the Mass at the church on Tuesday. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy (Mike) Mulherin of Marion; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice Donohoe; two sons, William and Robert McCracken; and daughter, Joan Heald.
Jim was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Chicago, the son of Clarence and Margaret (McFarlane) McCracken. He married Alice Donohoe on Jan. 2, 1937, in Rock Island, Ill. Jim worked at LaPlante-Choate and Allis-Chambers before becoming a manufacturing engineer for Harnischfeger for 43 years until his retirement in 1978.
He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and ice fishing and was an avid card player. Jim was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids.
