James Andrew Lowe was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Memphis, Tenn., the son of Lawrence and Lena Lowe. Following graduation from high school in Memphis, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. Returning from service, he received an undergraduate degree in business from Phoenix College. He then attended Colorado State for his veterinary medicine degree. While there, he met and married the love of his life, Gwendolyn J. Keating. After graduation, Jim and Gwen moved to Woodstock, Ill., where he worked as a large animal veterinarian. In 1957, they bought a small practice in Iowa City and then in 1965, built a new clinic specializing in small animals. Dr. Loren Maas joined his practice, and over the years, other doctors joined their practice.
Jim was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Iowa City Rotary Club, I-Club, Mercy Foundation, State Veterinary Examining Board, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, Visiting Nurses Association and other community and professional organizations.
In his youth, he was a Golden Gloves boxer. He was a Boy Scout leader for his son's pack and an avid reader. The great passions in his life, besides his beloved family, were Hawkeye sports, golf and playing poker with his buddies.
His son, Steve, was a very successful collegiate women's volleyball coach, and Jim was one of his biggest fans. Jim was so very proud of his children and later his grandchildren.
His family includes his wife, Gwen; daughter and her husband, Kathleen Lowe and Victor Harris; two grandsons, Jeff Lowe and Ian Lowe; Ian's wife, Soumya; and their two children, Kai and Yara; and Jim's brother, Phillip, and his wife, Monique.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Steve; sister, Ann; and brother, Laurence.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Jim's family and his services.
