Jim was born Nov. 27, 1944, in Earlville, Iowa, to Frank and Magdaline (Eike) Sperfslage. He was married to Lucy Hannan on June 11, 1966, at St. Joseph's Church in Rickardsville, Iowa. Jim and Lucy lived and raised their family on a farm north of Central City, Iowa, for 48 years. In 2019, they relocated to Ankeny, Iowa, to be closer to their family. Jim was a hard worker. He worked 12-hour night shifts at Quaker Oats, returning home to spend the day time hours farming. Though Jim had a limited education, Jim was extremely proud that both of his children and all five of his grandchildren have achieved or are working towards college degrees.
In retirement, Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing, specifically trout fishing, where he made many friends along the streams. He also enjoyed wintering in Arizona. Jim and Lucy, throughout their 55 years of marriage, enjoyed every minute together, especially their morning cup of coffee and conversation.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy; daughter, Kim (Brad) Beuter; daughter-in-law, Kris (Al) Miller; grandchildren, Jenna (Stephen) Kester, Hannah (Gabe) Gymer, Megan Sperfslage Miller (fiance Brennan), Emma Beuter (boyfriend Matt) and Johnathan Beuter; great-grandchildren, Hazel and Luke Kester, and a third due in November; siblings, Francis (Joan) Sperfslage, Viola (Clifford) Bentley, Eugene (Janet) Sperfslage, Lawrance (Alice) Sperfslage, Norbert (Sharon) Sperfslage and Tom (Lou) Sperfslage; and sisters-in-law, Ethel Sperfslage, Patsy Decker and Doris Hannan.
He is preceded in death by his son, Bruce; parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marie and Donald Hannan; brothers, LeRoy, Richard and Harold; brothers-in-law, Louis Decker and Ronald (Pete) Hilby; and sisters-in-law, Eileen Sperfslage and Iva Sperfslage.
