James Albert "Jim" Peterson, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at the Vinton Lutheran Home due to complications of Parkinson's disease. A celebration of life service for Jim will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton with the Rev. Sue Thomas officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Military rites will be provided by U.S. Navy Funeral Honors. Inurnment will be in Osage Cemetery at a later date.
Jim was born July 22, 1927, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Dale E. and Garnet Welch Peterson. He was a graduate of Osage High School and the University of Iowa. Jim proudly served his country as a fireman 1st class in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1946. He was a longtime member of George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 in Vinton.
On March 28, 1951, Jim was united in marriage with Jean Eiel in Osage. The couple moved to Vinton in 1952, where Jim co-owned and operated a lumber yard and was a livestock and crop farmer. Jim enjoyed playing golf, fishing, the Hawkeyes and daily drives in the country, viewing crops. He loved family time at the Minnesota cabin.
Jim was very active in the community. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Vinton Country Club, served on the utility board and was a 61-year member of the Lions Club. He was active with the Pork Producers Association, serving as vice president at the state level and president at the county and national levels.
Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Peterson of Vinton; two sons, Steve (Kate) Peterson of Madison, Wis., and Randy (Julie) Peterson of Vinton; one sister, Janet Peterson of Fredericksburg, Texas; seven grandchildren, Kelsey (Greg) Keyes, Lauren, Maggie, Claire, Kayla and Kendra Peterson and Philip Johnson; and three great-grandsons, Brody, Cole and Mason Keyes.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Peterson, in 1995.
A memorial fund has been established.
