James Hubert Johnson, 101, of Iowa City, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023.
A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Parkview Church, 15 Foster Rd., Iowa City; with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Military honors will be accorded by the Coralville American Legion Post 721. Memorials may be made to Parkview Church of Iowa City or The Wounded Warrior Project.
James was born on Oct. 24, 1921, in Humboldt, Iowa, the son of William and Bertha (Hefte) Johnson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served from 1941-45. James graduated with a B.A. from St. Olaf College in 1949, and The University of Iowa Dental College in 1954. On June 19, 1954, James was united in marriage to Edna Mae Kristiansen in Nashua, Iowa, they just celebrated 69 years together.
James and Kris “Edna Mae” moved to Cherokee, where he practiced dentistry for 56 years. He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served as a church councilman. He loved to play golf and enjoyed yearly fishing trips to Canada. Jim loved his family, friends and patients, and the community of Cherokee. Many knew Jim as a kind and gentle man.
James is survived by his wife, Kris; three daughters, Lisa (Mark) Mysnyk of Iowa City, Iowa, Heidi (Michael) Jacoby of Chicago, Ill., and Dagne (Mike) Gustafson of Greenwood, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Daniel Mysynk, Mary (fiance, Michael Pretorius) Mysynk, Rachael (Jon) Page, Eva (Aaron) Koehn, Anna (Bryan) Anderson, James Jacoby, Elyse (Joey) Phoenix, Nathan (Meredith) Gustafson and Jack Gustafson; 10 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and one sister, Betty Williams of Humboldt, Iowa.
James was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, William “Billy” Johnson, Wava Kimball and Phyllis Johnson.
