JAMES HENRY HERNDEN
Cedar Rapids
James Henry Hernden, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed Sept. 27, 2018, at the VA Community Living Centers, Des Moines.
He was born in Roseville, Mich., to Henry and Margie Hernden on March 5, 1932. He was one of nine siblings. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1950, serving in the Korean War. He received an honorable medical discharge. He married June Elliott in the 1950s, having five children. They later divorced. He married Colleen Sue Brager Stephen in 1964. He had one child with Colleen and two sons from Colleen's previous marriage.
He had an avid love of flying, owning three airplanes over time. He was a mechanic and the best body man around.
As his health failed, he maintained a positive attitude.
Jim is survived by his brother, Richard Hernden; sister, Gloria Rank of Michigan; daughter, Sharon Hernden; sons, Todd Stephen, Dennis (Donna) Stephen and Jerry Hernden, all of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Nancy of California, Brenda of Michigan and Suzie of Alaska; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim also is survived by his friend, Mitch Christopherson, who called him dad and was like a son to Jim.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings, his loving wife, Colleen; eldest son, James Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Julia Stephen.
Jim always enjoyed when people visited him in his home. Therefore, on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. at 2357 Coldstream Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, there will be Jim's Celebration of Life open house. Come share memories.
The family extends their gratitude to Therapy Solutions and the VA Hospital's staff for their excellent care and friendships.
He will be greatly missed.
