James E. Carter
James E. Carter of North Liberty passed away Dec. 17, 2022, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 73 years old.
Jim’s family will receive guests for visitation on Jan. 8, 2023, from 1 to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in North Liberty, 85 N Jones Blvd., North Liberty, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 4 p.m.
Jim was born May 25, 1949, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Paul and Lois (Pagel) Carter. When growing up he was active in Boy Scouts and earned the Eagle Scout award. After graduating from Kirkwood Community College he worked at Linkbelt/FMC in Cedar Rapids for 16 years and then for Sheller Globe/IAC in Iowa City, retiring in 2015. He was a member of the North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department from 1979 to 2000. Jim was also active in his church where he served on the Ministry Council for over 30 years. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, camping, fishing and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes. His greatest passion was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Jim was a kind, charming and friendly man with a wonderful sense of humor and smile that could light up a room. Jim was exceptional with numbers and details which served him well throughout his career in engineering, and in his retirement working as treasurer for his church. Most of all, Jim loved his family. His heart of gold and infectious smile will be missed tremendously, but his kindness will continue through all who loved him.
Jim’s family includes his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Debbie; daughters, Shannon (John) Innis, Stephanie (Jim) Boesenberg and Jamie (Morgan) Evans; grandchildren, Ryan Boesenberg, Grace Evans and Casey Evans; brother, Dennis (Katha) Carter; and stepsister, LeaAnn (Jim) Thompson. Sadly, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul “Nick” and Lois; sister, Janis Carter; stepmother, Ellie Carter; and mother-in-law, Jean Mahanna.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty or the Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County.
Jim’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the Bird House for their kindness and exceptional care of Jim.
