James David "Dave" Butler, 63, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at Mercy Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at St Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with a vigil service to follow at 6 p.m.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the Regina Foundation, St. Patrick Catholic Church or Iowa City Hospice.
Dave was born Sept. 23, 1953, in Iowa City, to Gloria (Otting) and Jim Butler. He was a graduate of Regina High School and University of Iowa, where he was an Iowa letterman football player in 1974 and 1975. He married Carol Russell on April 22, 1977. Dave was in the insurance business for over 30 years.
He was involved with Make-A-Wish Foundation, past board member of Iowa City Life Underwriters, past member of board of directors for Iowa Lettermens Varsity Club, member of ISU Cyclone Club and inductee of Regina Athletic Hall of Fame.
His warm and caring smile touched many lives. His love of God was only equaled by his love of family. He adored his grandchildren and loved to laugh with family and friends.
Impacting many in his personal and professional life, he listened with his heart and acted with his character. He will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and firm handshake.
Dave will be missed and his love will continue to shape the lives of many.
Dave is survived by his wife, Carol, and their three children, Brent (Erin), Urbandale, Zach (Karen), Urbandale, and Whitney Amoroso (Dominic), Urbandale; three grandchildren, Eric Amoroso, Patrick and Emmy Butler; his mother, Gloria Butler; mother-in-law, Angeline Russell; sisters, Becky Kriz and Trudy (Terry) Snavely; brother, Jim Butler; sister-in-law, Lana Wilcox; and brothers-in-law, Gordon (Judie) Russell Jr. and Sham (Denise) Russell; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Butler; father-in-law, Gordon Russell Sr.; brother-in-law, Tim Russell; and sister-in-law, Donna Nielsen.
