James Cahill
JAMES G. "JIM" / "LOUIE" CAHILL
Iowa City
James G. "Jim"/ "Louie" Cahill, 68, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly at Mercy Iowa City on Sunday, March 13, 2016.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. The family will then greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to St. Patrick's Church or the James Cahill Memorial Fund.
Jim was born Aug. 16, 1947, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of William and T. Wilma (Jones) Cahill. He attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Regina High School in 1967. At age 18, Jim started working for Moore Business Forms (now R.R. Donnelley Printers) in Iowa City. After 49 years, he finally decided to retire in 2014.
Jim was an avid fan of Rock Island Railroad memorabilia and had built a layout in his home, consisting mainly of Rock Island train cars and locomotives. The interesting fact about his layout is that it is built at ceiling level – and traveled from room to room in his home. The door to his home was always open to anyone who was interested in viewing the layout.
He was a generous and caring soul and his presence will be missed.
Survivors include his brother and sisters, Mary Ellen (Dean) Steckly of Kalona, Elyse Lewis of Iowa City, Patricia (Robert) Christensen of Carroll and John "Butch" (Nancy) Cahill of Iowa City; and many, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Raymond; a brother, Dave; a sister, Rose Cahill; a niece, Trish Cahill; sister-in-law, Peg Cahill; and a brother-in-law, Erv Lewis.
