Jacqueline Edith Barta, 70, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at Mercy Iowa City on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. A gathering to celebrate Jackie's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Bridget's Church, Nolan Settlement.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Friends of St. Bridget's Church and Johnson County Humane Society.
Jackie was born Sept. 25, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Vernon Edward and Rosella Mary (Kelley) Maher. She grew up on a farm near Nolan Settlement in Johnson County and graduated from West Branch High School in 1965. She and Stanley Ray Barta were married Nov. 9, 1968. Jackie graduated from Mercy School of Nursing, Iowa City, in 1968 and went to work for Mercy Hospital. After 40 years at Mercy, she retired as nurse manager in 2009.
She loved flower gardening, family history, scrapbooking, shopping and spending time with her dog, Sadie, and most of all, her beloved granddaughter and best friend, Emma Rose.
Survivors include her husband, Stan of Iowa City; sons, Chad Barta of Fort Myers, Fla., and Cory Barta of Tiffin; granddaughter, Emma Barta; sister, Rose Mary (Stan) Younce of Cedar Rapids; brother, Vernon Maher of Sacramento, N.M.; sister-in-law, Cindy Maher of Oxford; nieces, Keista (John) Mason and Jennifer (Brian) Tenge; and nephew, Sean (Jackie) Maher,
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents.
