Jackson T. Long, 93, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at The Woodlands/The Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids. Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, officiated by
Kay Mineck. Inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are his three children: daughter, Sarah (Rich) Rheinschmidt of Cedar Rapids, and sons, Jim of Rockford, Ill., and Dave (Roz) of New Raymer, Colo.; four grandchildren, Scott (Erica) of Cedar Rapids, Mark Rheinschmidt of West Des Moines, Andrew Jackson and David Robert James Long; and two great-grandchildren, Molly and Kathryn Rheinschmidt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Betty Crabb; and two sisters, Arba Dee Taylor and Doris Pitcher.
Jack was born Aug. 12, 1920, in Algona, Iowa, to Abner and Sarah Jackson Long. He graduated from Coe College in 1943 and then entered World War II. He was assigned as platoon leader with the unit that became known as Merrill's Marauders and subsequently the 475th Infantry Regiment. He received the Bronze Star for his service while in China and Burma. He completed 26 years of honorable military duty and retired from the Army Reserves in September 1967.
Following the war, Jack attended graduate school at the University of Iowa. He then began his career in Cedar Rapids, where he owned his own tax consulting business for 20 years. As a community leader, Jack served as executive vice president and then president of Perpetual Savings and Loan from 1965-1985.
Jack and Betty enjoyed many years of travel and friendships with their motor home traveling all around the United States. The 12 years at The Meth-Wick Community were special years for them both.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Coe College or The Meth-Wick Community.
