Jack "Shep" Springer, 82, of Cedar Rapids, left peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Marion, by Cecil Ballard. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home in Marion, and one hour before the funeral on Thursday. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, rural Toddville.
Survivors include his son, John Springer of Olin; daughter, Leah Beth Michalek of DeKalb, Texas; adopted daughter, Leta Springer of DeKalb, Texas; stepdaughter, Patty Beers of Chetek, Wis.; stepson, Ron Bothwell of Olin; significant other of 15 years, JoAnne Ferguson of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Alyssa, Kelsey and Natalie Springer, Scott and Chrissy Michalek, Joshua, April, and Aspen Bothwell, Jennifer and Scott Beers and Cara and Carla Bothwell; great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Springer; and brother, Donald Springer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida; stepson, Gary Bothwell; three brothers, Marvin, Floyd and Howard; and sister, Margaret Staab.
Jack was born Feb. 26, 1932, on Zika Avenue, Cedar Rapids, the son of Micajah and Leah (Hoover) Springer. Jack served his country loyally in the Air Force during the Korean War. In October 1955, Jack married Jo Katherine Whited. He later married Ida Katherine Martensen on Sept. 15, 1967, in Bertram. Ida passed away in 1998. Jack worked for the Chicago NW Railroad for 35 years. He spent the last 15 years of his life coming alive with the love of his life, JoAnne Ferguson, enjoying traveling and staying active. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was proud of his military service and strongly supported the American troops. Jack was a member of the Elks Club and the American Legion.
