JACK SCOTT
Marion
Jack E. Scott, 87, of Marion, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, following a love of life. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church in Marion the by Rev. Jon Moss. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Burial: Prairie Chapel Cemetery.
Jack E. was born April 7, 1928, the son of Irvin F. and Dorothy (Erwin) Scott of Marion. He attended country school near the family farm and graduated from Marion High School in 1946. On Aug. 6, 1950, Jack married Mary Alice McCabe in Cedar Rapids. They made their home on the farm north of Marion. Together they raised their family. He was a devoted husband and father. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 50 years, until Mary Alice's death in March 2001. Following Mary Alice's passing, he shared many years with his loving friend, Zelda Kinkead.
Jack was a true steward of the land; growing crops, soil conservation, raising livestock and his family. Get up early, work hard and help your neighbors. Along with farming, Jack worked construction. He built many homes in the area, as well as the family home. He worked many other jobs and came home to do the farm work with his Oliver equipment.
Jack was a lifelong member of Prairie Chapel Church and was involved with Farm Bureau, Linn Co-op Oil board of directors, Linn County Soil Commission, Marion township trustees, pork producers, cattlemen association, Crows Seed corn dealer, FFA and 4-H, and several other related organizations. He was a 50-year member of the Trojan Lodge No. 584 and Linn County Health Improvement Association. In 1976, Jack and Mary Alice were presented the Honored Farm Family award by the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce. He loved a good auction, Oliver tractors, a great pork loin sandwich, a drive to anywhere, a warm winter in Florida and an "I can fix it" attitude.
Survivors include, his children, Julie Scott of Marion, Sharon (Roy) Bowers of Cedar Rapids and Jeff Scott of Central City; a special grandson, Christopher (Sarah) Griswold of Cedar Rapids; brother, Bob (Joyce) Scott of Pasco, Wash.; sister, Margaret (Rupert) Kneef of West Plains, Mo.; special friend, Zelda Kinkead; sister-in-law, Betty (Bill) Briggs of Cedar Rapids; wonderful nieces and nephews; and many loving friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Alice; and many aunts and uncles.
He was our rock and will be missed.
