Jack Bernard Opdahl, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville. Memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Jack was born on Jan. 24, 1933, the son of Ernest and Freda (Jacob) Opdahl, in Ewart, Iowa. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1951. Jack served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Donna Jean Higgins on Sept. 14, 1958, in Des Moines. She died in 2005. They lived in Des Moines and Iowa City before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1969. Jack worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and US West. before retiring in 1992 with 41 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Surviving to honor his memory are his two sons, David Opdahl and Kent Opdahl; two grandchildren, Jenna (Garrett) Dickinson and Brett (Lydia) Opdahl; and two great-grandchildren, Dempsey Dickinson and Finley Opdahl.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and sister, Shirley Zimmerman, and her husband, Frank.
