J. L. "Jim" Williams, 85, of Iowa City, passed away Feb. 26, 2017, at Solon Nursing Care Center from cancer.
A memorial service is being planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, the Food Bank at the Iowa City Crisis Center, Planned Parenthood or the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City.
Jim was born Dec. 27, 1931, in Maud, Okla., the son of Grover and Cora Lela (Campbell) Williams.
Growing up in northeastern Oklahoma, Jim graduated from Drumright High School and received his bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1958.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as Airman 1st Class during the Korean War.
Upon returning from the military, Jim married Mary Janice Harbour on May 3, 1959, in Hobart, Okla. In 1958, he began his career with various pipeline corporations. He retired in 1992 after 30 years as a pipeline operations manager for Dome Pipeline Corp.
Jim was a registered professional engineer and a member of the Iowa City Optimist Club and Toastmasters of Tulsa, Okla.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janice; sons, Jim Williams (Sue) of Lone Tree, Pat (Akiko Iwamoto) Williams of Seattle, Wash., and David (Allison) Williams of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Andrew (Amanda) of Los Angeles and Katya and Max, both of Minneapolis; several nieces and nephews; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John Harbour of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jim Harbour of Hobart, Okla., and Jeff (Nancy) Harbour of Santa Fe, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jack; a sister, Billie Marie; and a half sister, Virgie.
