Iris May Schafbuch Cooney, 85, of Williamsburg, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at Highland Ridge Nursing Home, Williamsburg. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.
A memorial fund has been established.
Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Iris is survived by a son, Don (Vicki) Schafbuch of Marengo; three daughters, Catherine Uthoff-Schnabel of Blue Grass, Christy (Blake) Steinford of Marengo and LuAnn (Steve) Allar of Fairfax; nine grandchildren, Travis (Allison) Schlabach, Shannon (Luke) Slockett, Tiffany (Jeff) Simonsen, Bradley (Stephanie) Uthoff, Jill Uthoff, Alex Uthoff, Brook (Cody) Roberts, Cami Steinford and Katy (Mike) Norman; and 11 great-grandchildren, Ashlea and Austin Schlabach, Brynlee and Bryar Slockett, Simonsen twins on the way, Aksel Uthoff, Preston and Bryer Uthoff, and Hayden and Lane Norman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ray Schafbuch and James Cooney; brothers, Kenneth, Orrin and Edward; sisters, Helen Thorman and Joyce Unglenk; and a grandson, Darin Schlabach.
Iris May Gleason was born March 28, 1931, in Marengo, the daughter of John Henry and Anna Louis Eichorn Gleason. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1950. Iris married Ray L. Schafbuch on Nov. 17, 1951, in Marengo. She later married James R. Cooney on Jan. 10, 1976, in San Diego, Calif.
Iris was a beautician at the Cardinal Salon in Marengo for several years and thereafter an apartment manager in San Diego from 1976 to 2001.
Following her retirement in 2001, she returned to Marengo to be near her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included birdwatching, needlepoint, making each of her grandchildren baby quilts, reading, and most of all, enjoying her grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and her grand dogs she certainly loved all the dog visits.
The family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank-you to the staff at Highland Ridge Nursing Home and Essence of Life Hospice for the care of Iris.
