IRENE VIG
Cedar Rapids
Irene H. Vig, 96, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at Hallmar in Cedar Rapids. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Irene Hazel Vig was born March 27, 1918, to Elbert and Annie Gunderson Sherrets in Quasqueton, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Porter "Mickey" Vig on Dec. 2, 1939, in Cedar Rapids. He passed away in 1986.
Irene enjoyed being with her family and friends, as well as the special kinship she shared at The Salvation Army while attending exercise classes, craft classes and volunteering. She never gave up hope that the Cubs would make it to the World Series.
Irene started playing with the Cedar Rapids Wilson's Girls Softball Team in 1937 and continued until she was 32. She enjoyed watching most all sports on TV, but her true joy came when she went to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate.
Irene loved to travel, go fishing, watch the birds, garden, and make new friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Tom) Rosenberger and Judy (Dennis) Usher, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Diana Rosenberger, Christine (Brian) Rogers, Angie (Don) Northup, Matthew (Tina) Usher and Allison (Craig) Wilhelm; 10 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jennifer, Miranda, Drew, Tony, Olivia, Levi, Marie, Raquel and Renee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mickey; five sisters and two brothers.
Our special thanks to God for giving us her life for 96 years, to Hallmar (for the beyond excellent care), Hospice of Mercy, Diane Norton, ARPN, and to all her family and friends who had the privilege of sharing her love, laughter and life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids, 1000 C Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405 or Quasqueton Historical Society, 105 N. Water St., P.O. Box 224, Quasqueton, IA 52326.
