Irene M. Jass, 98, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at her home at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Irene was born on March 7, 1917, to Charles and Frieda Jass in Alden, Iowa. She graduated from Alden High School in 1934 and started her membership with Bethany Lutheran Church in 1934. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids for one year and graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1938. Irene was an office nurse for 48 years. Her last employment was with Dr. J.B. Nickol. She retired in 1986. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. She also was active in the Women's Guild. She belonged to many different organizations and spent time doing volunteer work. Her favorite organizations to volunteer for were Bethany Lutheran Church and Reach to Recovery with the American Cancer Society.
Irene is survived by her nephew, Richard (Candace) Mathes; her niece, Linda (Bill) Gilpin; three great-nephews, Wesley (Kalli) Mathes and their children Noah, Abagail and Elijah; Andrew Mathes; and Kyle (Erin) Gilpin and their child, Orea; and her great-niece Amy Gilpin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Frieda Jass; her brother, Carl R. Jass; and her sister, Ruth Jass Mathes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church for the window fund or the American Cancer Society.
