Irene Gladys Becicka, 99, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at Hiawatha Care Center. Celebration of Life services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. Burial will be in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Brosh Chapel.
Irene was born Dec. 22, 1919, in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Charles and Libbie (Zalesky) Svoboda. She graduated from Shueyville High School. Irene was united in marriage to Frank Becicka on Feb. 18, 1941. Irene and Frank farmed together in the Solon and the Central City areas for many years. She enjoyed gardening, baking kolaches, dancing, listening to Czech music and spending time with her family, especially hearing stories of her great-grandson, Finn.
Irene is survived by her children, Arlene (Kenneth) Otto of Cedar Rapids and Kenneth (Barbara) Becicka of Central City; two grandsons, Troy (Deanna) Becicka of Allison Park, Pa., and Todd (Meredith) Becicka of Rogers, Minn.; one great-grandson, Finn; and her sister, Marcella (Robert) Barta of Cedar Rapids; as well as two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Frank, who died July 19, 1987.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
