Ireland, Arlo C.
Arlo C. Ireland, 84, of Wyoming, Iowa, died Monday morning, April 23, 2012, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Monticello, Iowa. A celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 26, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held before the service from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Carson Celebration of Life Center. Burial will be at the Wyoming, Iowa, cemetery at a later date.
Arlo Clayton Ireland was born on Oct. 31, 1927, in Delmar, Iowa, to Albert and Hazel (Ward) Ireland. He grew up in the Delmar area and graduated from Delmar High School in 1945, and Iowa State University in 1960. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. He married Gladys Elizabeth Jorgensen on Feb. 1, 1953, in Delmar, Iowa.
After his honorable discharge, they lived in Ames while he went to school and then they moved to Monticello, where they farmed from 1961 to 1966. In 1970, Arlo began working as a millwright in the foundry at John Deere in Silvis, Ill., retiring in 1991.
Arlo was a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church, Wyoming American Legion Post #259 and the Maquoketa Masonic Helion Lodge #36 AF & AM. Arlo enjoyed tinkering in his shop. He loved fixing things and working with his hands. In his earlier years, he had his pilot's license and owned a small aircraft.
Arlo is survived by his wife, Gladys Ireland of Wyoming; children, Wade (Kathy) Ireland of Cedar Rapids, Kevin (Cindy) Ireland of Ely, Sandra (Randy) Antons of Anamosa, Lisa (Jerry) Burns of Marion, and Joni (Lennie) Miller of Onslow; a daughter-in-law, Carol Ireland of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Clarice (Darrell) Kaestner of Newhall, and Lucille Smith of Gold, Ore.; 12 grandchildren, Nick, Eric, Matt, Tony, Jared, Ben, Brice, Cole, Grant, Tabitha, Sara and Lindsay; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Madeline; two stepgrandchildren, Reggie and Amy; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Camryn and Calen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Lynette in 1966 and Steven in 2008.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are preferred to the Arlo C. Ireland memorial fund.
