IMOGENE SCHLABAUGH

Imogene Schlabaugh was born Jan. 11, 1930, in rural Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Gertrude (Miller) Gingerich. She graduated from Iowa Mennonite High School in 1949. On June 30, 1950, Imogene was united in marriage to Emil Schlabaugh at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. They made their home in the Kalona community and traveled all over the country to attend art shows for Schlabaugh and Sons Woodworking.
Imogene helped with preschool in downtown Kalona and provided daycare at her home. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She was artistic and loved drawing. She loved family times, especially all of the grandkids. Imogene was surrounded by her loving family and passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona, at the age of 87 years.
Imogene is survived by her husband, Emil, and their five children, Steve (Dixie) Schlabaugh of Kalona, Mark (Doreen) Schlabaugh of Kalona, John (Jane) Schlabaugh of Kalona, Mary Ann (Tim) Gaffey of Iowa City and David (Julie) Schlabaugh of Williamsburg; 14 grandchildren, Ryan (Stephanie) Schlabaugh, Jenny (Chad) Gillam, Clint (Jen) Schlabaugh, Brooke Schlabaugh, Rebecca (Willie) Bender, Kevin (Brittany) Schlabaugh, Kirk (Maria) Schlabaugh, Hannah Schlabaugh, Megan Schlabaugh, Kara Schlabaugh, Lindsay (Corbin) Blythe, Zach Schlabaugh, Carly Schlabaugh and Gabe Schlabaugh; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dale (Ruth) Gingerich of Carmel, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred (Emerson) Swartzendruber and Shirley (Jim) Conrad.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa Mennonite School, Pleasantview Home and Kalona First Responders.
